Soil biodiversity is the cornerstone of many essential ecosystem functions that sustain life on Earth. Yet, assessing this biodiversity has traditionally been a complex and resource-intensive task, requiring deep expert knowledge and significant time investments. However, with the rapid advancements in remote sensing and sensor technology, measuring soil biodiversity has become more efficient, offering greater accuracy and reducing the dependency on specialised taxonomic knowledge.
One such innovation is ecoacoustics, a rapidly growing and powerful tool in biodiversity monitoring. Thanks to breakthroughs in machine learning and the accessibility of affordable programmable recorders, ecoacoustics is now being used to monitor biodiversity across various habitats. Building on this promising technology, our sister company, Soil Acoustics Ltd., has developed the Soil Acoustics Meter (SAM). Designed, researched and manufactured with support from the DEFRA Farm Innovation Programme grant, in collaboration with scientists from the University of Warwick, SAM records the sounds of soil-dwelling organisms such as worms, beetles and ants, providing valuable insights into soil health through acoustic analysis.
Join this webinar to hear from experts who will share their insights on the latest innovations in sensing technology and what the future holds for soil biodiversity research.
