Baker Consultants’ Carlos Abrahams to present at Developments in Monitoring Science Conference

Carlos Abrahams, Technical Director at Baker Consultants, will be giving a presentation on bioacoustics for monitoring rare breeding bird populations at the British Ornithologists Union conference later in the year.

The British Ornithologists’ Union (BOU) will be hosting a virtual conference: Developments in Monitoring Science | BOUsci21, 24-25 November 2021. A number of ornithologists and ecologists from academic and conservation organisations have been invited to discuss the monitoring of bird populations and how recent breakthroughs offer new possibilities for improving existing monitoring programmes, as well as extending monitoring methods to new species, regions and habitats.

During the conference’s bioacoustics session, Carlos Abrahams will be giving his presentation on Combining bioacoustics and occupancy modelling for improved monitoring of rare breeding bird populations. Carlos published a paper in the Elsevier Ecological Indicators journal on this topic in 2020, providing strong research evidence for using acoustic recordings for bird monitoring, which can provide improved data capture quality over traditional survey methods.

Carlos’ innovative research was received well within the ecology industry, opening up new opportunities for species monitoring using technology and data analysis skills, as well as making surveying more accessible for landowners, developers and estate managers. His research also won Baker Consultants an Innovation award in the CIEEM 2020 awards.
