Baker Consultants’ Carlos Abrahams Takes on New Role as Director of Bioacoustics

Baker Consultants is pleased to announce that our Technical Director, Carlos Abrahams, is taking on a new specialist role as Director of Bioacoustics after his outstanding work in this highly specialised and expanding field.

During his nearly 11 years at Baker Consultants and career spanning over 25 years, Carlos has worked on a range of schemes, including housing, commercial, transport, energy and flood defence projects throughout the UK.

In 2020, Carlos published a paper on Combining bioacoustics and occupancy modelling for improved monitoring of rare breeding bird populations in the Elsevier Ecological Indicators journal. Carlos’ research, which provided strong evidence for using acoustic recordings for bird monitoring, has become highly regarded within the industry and introduced new avenues for exploring species monitoring using technology and data analysis skills. His innovative work has helped to make surveying more cost effective and scientifically robust and won Baker Consultants an Innovation Award in the CIEEM 2020 awards.

With his well-renowned specialism in Bioacoustics, we know Carlos will hit the ground running in his new role as Director of Bioacoustics and will continue to push boundaries in this area, as well as keeping Baker Consultants at the forefront of this field.

Andrew Baker, Managing Director at Baker Consultants, said, “There are a number of new challenges with the demands for high quality ecological data and how this needs to be dealt with by ecologists. Initiatives such as Biodiversity Net Gain, new agri-environment schemes and rewilding projects all need robust and long-term monitoring approaches. Bioacoustic methods meet this need, and Baker Consultants is the most advanced company in providing this service within the UK. As a result, Carlos will be concentrating on delivering our expertise in this area to a wider range of clients.”
