Baker Consultants’ Carlos Abrahams Investigates How Soil Ecoacoustics Can Support Habitat Restoration

Baker Consultants’ Director of Bioacoustics, Carlos Abrahams, has started the initial stages of research on soil ecoacoustics, investigating how this innovative method can be used to support habitat restoration.

With a career spanning over 25 years, Carlos has developed a number of skills in habitat creation, management and research, and in the last few years has become a well-known name in the industry for his specialism in successfully using bioacoustics methods for bird surveys.

Baker Consultants has been continuing research and development work on the use of acoustic methods within ecological practice. Following previous initiatives covering bird surveys, pond assessments and agri-environment monitoring, Carlos is now spearheading a new project investigating how soil ecoacoustics can be used to support habitat restoration.

Carlos will be recording the sounds produced by soil fauna in a range of restored woodland habitats to see how these vary under different conditions. The characteristics of the sounds will then be related to measures of biodiversity produced by DNA sampling methods.
