The Diary of an Ecology Apprentice: Renovations & Rothamsted Research

January was a month of growth, both professionally and personally, for our Ecology Apprentice, Matthew Keough. Kicking off the year by moving house saw him throw himself into home renovations for the first time, before returning to work and visiting Rothamsted Research for more ecoacoustics research. Find out more about Matthew’s January in his latest diary entry:

January has been quite the whirlwind so far, filled with excitement, challenges and new beginnings. The month kicked off with a thrilling milestone as my partner and I finally acquired the keys to our new house. The anticipation had been building for months and stepping through that door for the first time as the owners was a moment I’ll never forget.

The next three weeks were dedicated to renovations. With time off work, I dove headfirst into transforming our new abode into a place we could truly call home. From peeling wallpaper, filling holes and painting walls, every task brought us closer to realising our vision. It wasn’t always easy – there were moments of frustration and exhaustion – but seeing the progress each day was incredibly rewarding.

As the renovations neared completion, it was time to return to work after the Christmas break. On my first week back, I returned to Rothamsted Research with Carlos and Karthik which is always fun. I was also given the task to create efficiencies for our desk study process. It’s a daunting task but one that aligns perfectly with my skills and interests. I’m eager to dive into the project, brainstorming innovative solutions and collaborating with my colleagues to streamline our workflow. No doubt I will be using R to try and automate data sorting!

Balancing work and home renovations will undoubtedly be a juggling act, but I’m ready to tackle whatever comes my way. January has already been a month of growth, both personally and professionally, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store.
